18ct Yellow Gold Hand Engraved Buckle Ring, London 1918

The ring is crafted from rich 18ct Yellow Gold and weighs an impressive 7.4 grams. It measures approximately 6.7mm in width and has a satisfyingly substantial feel without being overly chunky. At the centre sits the beautifully detailed buckle motif, complete with a raised strap and pin, surrounded by ornate foliate engraving. Further engraved detailing continues onto the shoulders, so there is something to appreciate from every angle.

Buckle jewellery has a long history, becoming particularly fashionable during the Victorian period and continuing into the early 20th Century. The motif was traditionally associated with strength, loyalty and an enduring bond, making these rings especially charming pieces to collect and wear today.

Inside the band are British hallmarks confirming 18ct Gold and that it was hallmarked in London in 1918. There is also a Makers Mark which has become distorted and worn over its long life. We believe this may be the mark of Solomon Schonberg, although due to the wear we cannot confidently attribute it to the maker.

It is currently a UK size N½ and is a fabulous example of an antique buckle ring. Its generous gold weight, beautiful engraving and unmistakable antique character make it a particularly special survivor from over a century ago.
