Antique 18ct Yellow Gold Sapphire & Diamond Ring, Chester 1900

The traditional five-stone arrangement alternates three blue sapphires with two old-cut diamonds, with the largest sapphire taking centre stage. The graduated design gives the ring a lovely balance across the finger, while the openwork setting allows the individual stones to remain prominent. The deep blue of the sapphires looks particularly beautiful against the warmth of the antique yellow gold, punctuated by the softer sparkle of the two diamonds.

Looking at the ring from the side reveals some of its loveliest craftsmanship. The stones are held within an ornate scrolling gallery, typical of jewellery from this period, with the shoulders tapering neatly into a slender polished band. Rather than feeling overly formal, the design has that slightly romantic, characterful appearance that makes antique gemstone rings so appealing.
